The Mannheim Water Tower francais Deutsch

The Mannheim Water Tower was designed by the architect Gustav Halmhuber, and constructed from 1886 to 1889. It is 60.33 meters high, and the water tank has a volume of approx. 2000 cubic meters. The Water Tower is the landmark of the city of Mannheim.

The Mannheim Water Tower

As of 1891, Otto Beck was the Lord Mayor of Mannheim. During his term of office, plans for the design and construction of the "Friedrichsplatz" were made. The Berlin architect, Prof. Bruno Schmitz, designed this structure, as well as, for example, that of the "Rosengarten", Mannheim's stately art nouveau structure, and the arcades or the fountain construction surrounding the water tower. Today, they are considered to be the most unique historical art nouveau monuments throughout Germany.

During World War II, the Mannheim Water Tower was heavily damaged. The issue concerning its reconstruction was finally decided upon according to a vote of the people. The casting of votes with a "citizen ballot" during the time from May 14 - 19, 1956, was organized and published by the "Mannheimer Morgen", Mannheim's daily newspaper. Just imagine, if as a result, the castle and the water tower would have been simply torn down back then!

On November 5, 1963, the figure of the Greek goddess "Amphitrite" - the wife of Poseidon - and her trident, were constructed out of copper as exact copies of the original, and installed with a crane as a crowning finish on the rooftop of the Mannheim Water Tower.

The Mannheim Water Tower has advanced to be an architectural monument that has found its way into the hearts of the people, and without which the face of the city can hardly be imagined.
Thousands upon thousands of trysts have been made here. The "Meeting Place Mannheim Water Tower" is an icon for young and old today, as well as in the future.
